Turns out F1 fans really care about modeling.

I’m indifferent to the subject

if the ladies want to do it, by all means, let them do it.

I work with a lot of people in modeling and wouldn’t think any of them are interested in fashion.

More like multiple regressions and Monaco simulations.

Modeling? Not really. But I do understand the points about exposure.

For me, F1 is as much of a motorsport experience as a cultural one. I really enjoy traveling to other countries to watch an F1 race take place and seeing grid girls in traditional garb was always a nice touch.

And especially with F1, you think they would be more concerned about driving safety, the driving privileges of women, or maybe shine the light on women in various roles of motorsport instead of this solution to a problem no one was having.

My final thought is that Liberty is trying to do away with most Bernie’isms ingrained in the sport and also attempting to appease everyone in their search for a greater audience.

And if any of us thought this was bad, I would love to see the reaction to the NFL removing cheerleaders.

This is a bad take. F1 is owned by an operating company, and it’s clearly their decision, not “the ladies.” These jobs were not created out of some altruistic desire to employ out-of-work models.

oh I know its their decision.

as sparked by people complaining about grid girls to begin with.

“For me, F1 is as much of a motorsport experience as a cultural one. I really enjoy traveling to other countries to watch an F1 race take place and seeing grid girls in traditional garb was always a nice touch.”

- I’ve seen this point being floated on twitter too. The problem is that 1) most of these costumes are not representative, as Stef pointed out with her tweet:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

and 2) I must have missed the in-depth segments during pre-race coverage where the designers of the costumes were profiled along with a sartorial history of the region. Almost like it wasn’t a priority until the pretty ladies were being taken away...

“And especially with F1, you think they would be more concerned about driving safety, the driving privileges of women, or maybe shine the light on women in various roles of motorsport instead of this solution to a problem no one was having.”

- This was a “problem people were having,” there have been complaints about it for years. Also, this argument implies that concern for women is somehow zero-sum; if I care about grid girls, I couldn’t POSSIBLY care about women drivers.

“My final thought is that Liberty is trying to do away with most Bernie’isms ingrained in the sport and also attempting to appease everyone in their search for a greater audience.”
- That it’s a cynical decision does not make it an incorrect one. We all know their mandate is to grow the sport. Making the sport more welcoming to half the population seems like a pretty easy choice. Nice bonus that it’s also the morally correct one.

Sure, let’s make this into a bigger deal than it already isn’t.

1. Great? I still like it, don’t really care what is floated on Twitter. And as to Stef’s point, the dirndls were cool! Sorry they didn’t dress them up as full Cowboys/Cowgirls but you know, I’m not really in charge.

2. Maybe you did? Even the RB boys got involved. It’s not about the designers, it is about the region. Don’t know why you’re hung up on fashion.

3. All I’m saying is stronger messages can be sent if that was their intention.

4. Never said it was incorrect, I think anyone that follows F1 knows this isn’t the case. Not everyone on the internet is trying to disagree with you or the worst person on Earth.

At the end of the day, this was just a firestorm caused by a Sean Bratches quote and F1 journos. F1 has bigger problems. Couldn’t care less going forward, have a good one!
